Female protagonists are not to be feared

While reading the January 2011 issue of Nintendo Power, I came across an interview with Peter Ong, co-owner of game developer DreamRift. Ong is also director of the upcoming DS title Monster Tale, a novel mix of Metroidvania-style platformer and virtual pet sim. When asked why the main character is a girl, he provided a rather candid answer:

Fun is like an endangered monkey

No, Thank YouA news story making the rounds right now involves PlayStation Network title Joe Danger, which was turned down by several publishers but went on to sell 50,000 copies in its first week on Sony’s digital distribution platform.

The frustration of lost time: does it affect you?

(image from xyso.files.wordpress.com)Even within the same genre, games can vary greatly. You may love fighting games, for example, but certain design choices can suck the fun right out of some titles. I find this happens to me with SRPGs (strategy role-playing games).

I’ve played the original Shining Force series (1, 2, and CD mostly) over and over again, yet I’ve owned Fire Emblem on Game Boy Advance for probably five years now and have yet to finish it. Even though I like the game, a small part of me actually dreads going back to finish it. The two play almost identically, so why the disparity? It all comes down to the concept of lost time. The two best Tetris games you’ve never played

Just a few weeks ago, Tetris Party Deluxe shipped for the Wii and Nintendo DS, bringing with it an impressive array of modes and ways to play. No single version of Tetris, however, contains every mode included in every game ever made. That’s why it’s worth breaking out some of those older editions occasionally – to get a fix of your favorite modes.

There are so many Tetris games out there that it’s highly unlikely for someone to have played them all, or even know about them all. Among the less well-known versions, two of the best are, strangely enough, both on the Nintendo 64. (continue reading…)
