StarCraft II: The 7 Roach Rush

The game Starcraft has one of the most dedicated followings of any PC game in the past decade. The recent release of Starcraft 2 means that the community has had to adapt to the new gameplay mechanics. This generally involves trial by fire, and analysis of different strategies by the players. Once a strong opener has been established, it becomes a standard for the community. Generally, these openers are created by the top players in the community. However, one user developed a genetic algorithm to create these build orders and developed the 7 Roach Rush. (continue reading…)

Site downtime

Hi all, you may have noticed recently that the site didn’t look quite right. Unfortunately, we got hacked and things got a bit messy. Luckily, our server hosts seem to have gotten everything under control. I still have a bunch of post ideas that I hope to get around to still, and I’ve been meaning to chime in about the dance games on Kinect. Between work, gaming, etc., there’s never enough time in each day!

Happy Holidays!!

The Test of Time: Motor City Patrol

Motor City Patrol box artMotor City Patrol is an epic tale of cops & robbers a game where you drive around a lot and stop other cars. Oh yeah, and you have a gun (which I never used). Wow, time flies. September started strong with a trip to Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle (tweeting from the floor was pretty fun), and I even picked up a bunch of people’s Twitter accounts through Dragon Quest IX‘s tag mode. The presenters were really cool and a pleasure to talk to. The swag was more plentiful than expected, plus there were a lot of good demos on the show floor. I couldn’t believe the scope that such a young convention has reached in a relatively short amount of time.

Suddenly, it’s somehow mid-October already, so I thought I’d take a look back at what’s been keeping me busy on the gaming front for the month of September. (continue reading…)

“It’s (still) thinking.” Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!!!

The legendary Dreamcast turns 11 today (DOB: 9/9/99 – who could forget!), and if my posts thus far haven’t given me away, I am a HUGE Dreamcast fan! Who doesn’t remember the orca scene in Sonic Adventure, the jaw-dropping beauty of Soul Calibur‘s arcade-perfect port, or tagging your first sign in Jet Grind Radio. I couldn’t let today pass without commemorating such a special occasion.

So how has our little white wonder box fared this year? Let’s take a look at some of the activity going on in the Dreamcast scene. (continue reading…)

Proof that there’s a rabbit on the moon – Looney Tunes: Space Race

Image from Wikimedia CommonsTonight I’m bringing you another game that “serious” gamers may have overlooked due to the “kiddy” factor. Looney Tunes: Space Race is a cel-shaded Mario Kart clone set in space (meaning floatier physics) based off of a cartoon license. That could be a setup for disaster, but it’s actually surprisingly fun and solid. (continue reading…)
